From the New York Times bestselling author of THE DEAD WILL TELL comes a new short story offering a glimpse into Chief of Police Kate Burkholder's past and her Amish roots.
It's autumn in Painter's Mill, and fourteen year old Katie Burkholder has been tasked with picking apples in Zimmerman’s Orchard with her brother. It’s just another day filled with chores—until her best friend Mattie arrives to help. Somehow, boredom transforms into fun and games whenever the girls are together. The innocent fun comes to an end when Billy Marquardt and his gang of friends interrupts. Katie is no prude, but she knows better than to associate with the older English boys, especially since they’re known troublemakers. Mattie has no such compunction. Thumbing her nose at the Ordnung and all of the Amish rules, she disappears into the old barn with Billy.
Moments later, the Zimmerman’s barn is consumed by fire. Katie suspects Billy had something to do with the blaze, but he denies it. When the facts don’t add up, Katie begins her own investigation—and she doesn’t like what she finds. Will her friendship with Mattie survive the truth?

"Zimmerman's Orchard was the last place fourteen-year-old Katie Burkholder wanted to be, especially with her older brother, Jacob."FINAL DECISION: An intriguing little story that gives more background and depth to Kate and her family and friends, this short story gives readers a glimpse into Kate's life as a young teenager.
THE STORY: Fourteen year old Amish Kate Burkholder is avoiding her chores with her best friend Mattie. When a barn burns, Kate is torn between the evidence and believing her best friend's version of events.
OPINION: This short story taking place in Kate's teenage years gives some interesting insights into Kate and her relationships with her Amish friends and family. Kate is as dogged as an adult and also willing to go for overall justice even if not particularly factual. I liked seeing this glimpse into Kate before her life became more dark and complicated. I didn't think this story was needed to understand Kate or those around her and I don't think I would reach for this as a re-read but I was satisfied with the story.
WORTH MENTIONING: This story takes place not long before Kate's rape.
CONNECTED BOOKS: SEEDS OF DECEPTION is book 7.5 of the Kate Burkholder series.
STAR RATING: I give this book 3 stars.

Seeds of Deception A Kate Burkholder Short Story Single edition by Linda Castillo Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
I love all of Linda Castillo's Kate Burkholder stories that I have read so far (including the short stories) except for this one. What a huge disappointment and waste of time and my $0.99. I know this is a short story but even short stories have endings. This one doesn't. I also understand that this is supposed to give us a small glimpse into Kate's childhood and her friendship with Mattie, but in my opinion it is not necessary as all of her stories already give us a small glimpse into her childhood. The novel "Her Last Breath" (which is very good by the way) also gets into more detail about her childhood friendship with Mattie. So I find this story pointless. Oh and I lost count of how many times it was mentioned in this story that "Billy Marquart is a liar and a troublemaker".
Had I realized that this book takes place in the main character's early years, I would have read it before the Silence Series. It makes a great sequel to those books.
Linda Castillo quickly became my favorite author when I read "Sworn to Silence" and immediately read each following book in the series. The Kate Burkholder books are addictive and I found them near impossible to put down. Linda's writing style is smooth and detailed. The dialogue is natural and conversations between her well-developed characters read naturally. I highly recommend anything by this author, however, "Seeds of Deception" and the rest of the Kate Burkholder books are superior to many other books I have read in this genre.
Innocence is a hard thing to lose and when young Katie Burkholder has to decide between the story that her best friend is telling and one that the local bully and liar is saying, Katie’s world comes into a sharper focus. Things are not adding up in Katie’s mind and sometimes “the lines between right and wrong seemed crooked and gray”. She knows where her responsibilities lie, but sometimes it is best to let things play out.
This short story does not add anything to the Kate Burkholder series; there are no deep secrets revealed or clarifications made. Maybe you can call it a slight glimpse into what helped to form Kate, but still, there is nothing new here.
Due take note that about half of this offering is Seeds of Deception with the balance being a sneak peek of her upcoming novel – Among the Wicked.
Chief of Police Kate Burkholder grew up Amish – Painter’s Mill was her home town, and she lived with her Datt, Mamm, brother Joseph and sister Sarah where they worked the farm from early morning until late at night. When Katie was fourteen she and Joseph went to the nearby Zimmerman farm to pick apples for Mamm’s cooking. With the arrival of Katie’s best friend Mattie, her day immediately looked brighter. But her Mamm and Datt didn’t approve of her friendship with Mattie – she was a bad influence, a “wild child” according to them.
The arrival in the orchard of the English boy Billy Marquardt made Katie uneasy, but Mattie was up for some fun. When they headed to the barn, Katie refused to follow – but she was worried for her friend. The ensuing fire which engulfed the barn had the police investigating Mattie, Billy and Katie – what would they find? Katie was sure her friend was innocent and she was determined to find the truth. But was there trouble ahead?
Seeds of Deception is a short story by Linda Castillo which is part of the Kate Burkholder series. It’s an enjoyable little glimpse at part of the tough police chief’s childhood, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I love this author’s work, and had no hesitation in purchasing it. Highly recommended.
I have read all of the Kate Burkholder series and love them. I realize this was a short story but I'm not sure why she even wrote it. In my opinion it was a waste of time. Just as I was getting to where I thought she would start wrapping up the story she just stopped writing! No conclusion to the story whatsoever!! Maybe I just don't get it but as a reader I feel like we were left hanging while she threw in a preview to her next book. Perhaps she had referenced this story in a previous Kate Burkholder book but if she did I certainly don't remember it. I had already read the book she was giving us a preview to, but had I not read it this would have probably angered me enough to not purchase that book. In my opinion, Ms. Castillo can do better than writing an incomplete short story to sell her next book. An FYI, the story was actually quite good which is why I gave this review two stars rather than one, I just wish she would have finished it.
