Anita Confessions of Her Caregiver eBook Ian Denchasy Reviews
For adult children caring for their aging parents with Alzheimer and dementia , you are not alone. I applaud Mr Denchasy for having the courage and talents to share his genuine experience with me as a reader.
I had the honor of reading this most interesting and (unfortunately, quite realistic) book just now. Let me tell you, it is a real page-turner! What I mean by "page-turner" is that once I started reading, I didn't want to take reading breaks (any more than needed) until done. This is noteworthy, since such phenomenon is more common with me usually with fiction than with non-fiction; this is obviously non-fiction, a definite true story, yet captivating nonetheless. I think it is the author's writing style, which brings humor, suspense, etc., to some real life struggles, telling/writing them truthfully but in such a story-style that creates this feeling of suspense and captivation.
To me, personally this book has additional great significance that reaches far beyond any "entertainment" value of a captivating story This is because this reader just happens to also be a physician. I often have geriatric patients, brought in to clinic by their adult sons or daughters, embarking on journeys not too different from portions of this biography. Now I have an insightful book to recommend to these families; it will be much appreciated for the educational aspects, and for the feeling of support that comes from knowing others have had and are experiencing these very tricky and often alarming situations. (Read it to see how tricky and alarming things get ... and how the family manages to get through it all.)
Not everyone can be a judge of every book. Not every story or novel deserves a rave or a pan. But what this book chronicles is too important to ignore. The aging of America and the consequences that aging places on family caregivers is alarming at best.
More disturbing, however, than any of the events that the author details in his book is the all-too-recognizable mental fragility that we all share with him. While Anita’s clearly on the far end of the "impossible to handle" scale as the end of her life drew near, her social estrangement and sporadic paranoia mirror what many caregivers face daily dealing with those suffering from dementia. And this nearly constant barrage can take its toll on the family giving care as well. How could it not. Dementia in that respect is contagious for the ones least capable to fend it off and not one of us is immune.
The real core of any book is found in a devastating twist that unravels plans and lays bare the entire story for what it is ... "A devout wish that things had gone differently". You get that with this read. I wish it went differently for Anita and especially for those entrusted with her care. The question to answer is ... "What would any of us do if placed in the author's position?" We all may say that we would do things differently. And we likely would. But the result would be the same.
If this book becomes a guide on what dangers lurk in old age … if this book makes you better prepare for your own future as a caregiver or a recipient of care ... I think that it had been worth your time reading.
I chose to read this book, because I am in the same situation. The author has delivered the reality of being a caregiver to a loved one.
This is a wonderful and sad story about a real life situation. Great insight into the world of dementia and caregivers. With an aging population we should all read and learn about it.
I feel much more confident if I am ever put in that situation in my life. It prepared me for the worst as well as gave me hope for the best. Brought me to tears many times. The hardship that was brought to this wonderful family was quite a remarkable, struggling adventure. I am very grateful for this book and recommend it to anyone whom has parents, grandparents, or friends with this disease or any other and on their last years or months of life. Which is everyone. Because we will all be there someday.
I believe it took a lot of personal courage to dedicate over 10 years of their lives taking care of someone they loved . I also think the courage to write this book is beyond my comprehension . To freely admit their inner feelings for everyone to read is an amazing feat . My heart goes out to this family.
